Ding Yan(1794-1876),also named Jianqing and Zhetang,he is a Confucian scholar in the late Qing Dynasty and was born in Shanyang county,Jiangsu province(now belongs to Huai'an).He wrote more than sixty kinds of academic works,and published some of the works named Yizhizhai Series.His academic works like TheRemaining Criticism of Shangshu,the collenction of Zheng's Shipu,The correction of Maoshi-Lushu,The criticism of Cao's poetry was highly valued by academic circles.However,there is none of the accurate and detailed chronicle of Ding up to now,any scholars often make mistakes when they mentioned Ding.This chronicle in Ding was written on the basis of the old chronicle which was written by his sons,nephew and students,through investigating hundreds of academicworks,poems,articles,letters,diaries,painting and calligraphy inscriptions,combined with local chronicles and archives of the Qing court,gave a comprehensiveintroduction of Ding's life,friends,academic works and academic experience,enriched many details of his life,added some important events which was missed by old chronicles,corrected many age-old error records.According to the characteristics of Ding's life,this chronicle is divided into four volumes.Volume one introduced Ding's young reading period,volume two introduced Ding's taking exams in Beijing,volume three introduced Ding's rescuing crisis,volume four introduced Ding's teaching life in his last years.The boundaries between each volume are not strict,with regard to writing academic works,he neverstopped.There is an outline before each volume,briefly introduced the main content of this volume.In the end of this chronicle attached several textual research article,like "Ding Yan's academic works" "the research of Ding Yan's collection of poems andessays" " the catalogue of Ding Yan's extra poems and essays,letters.""the redress of Ding Yan's unjust case of plagiarism" "the collection of biographies of Ding Yan" and"Name index" "Table of names and aliases".
