This is the report on the translation of Phytonutrients,of which Chapter 1 is the source text.Under the guidance of experiential function, logical function and grammatical metaphor subordinate to Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics, three courses of preparing, translating and assessing are elaborated.China has attached more importance to invigorating agriculture by relying on science and education because agriculture is the foundation of the national economy.Sino-foreign technological exchanges are a crucial step.Specifically, the translation of related scientific documentation can spur access to advanced agricultural technologies abroad, promoting Chinese agricultural development. The first chapter of Phytonutrients written by Andrew Salter and other two authors has shown experimental data, process, and conclusion to convey scientific principles of plants and the role of plants in the human diet.Phytonutrients was rewarded as one of “Outstanding Academic Title from 2012” by Choice,a publishing unit of Association of College and Research Librariesin America. After having an intensive reading for several times, the author decided to translate it on account of its academic merits.Four chapters constitue the report presenting the translation process.Chapter 1 summarizes background and linguistic features and explains the significance. The features include the vocabulary of botany, medicine, scientific experiment, etc.and plenty nominalization and English passive voice.Translational procedures are elaborated in chapter 2.Through repeated reading before translating, the author using translation tools to establish term database, which help to achieve terminological consistency and improve the efficiency, also easy to readers. The next step could draw on the experience of the previous studies on the scientific and technological English translation progress in agriculture, particularly on the SFL.In Chapter 3,the source text is characterised by nominalization and transinformation.Considering that, the author generalizes two translation strategies: transitivity process-for-process translation and explicitation in meta-function by combining the previous experience.Transitivity process-for-process translation keep the unchanged transitivity in both ST and TT,which aims for precise target language and transinformation.Explicitation in metafunction refers to experiential function which is achieved by adding or converting into participants or circumstantial element; The logical function is achieved by expansion. There are exapmles to explaining how to control TT's quality in chapter 4.After basically finishing the translation, revision from the translator, her Supervisor and the agricultural expert can control the quality.Chapter 5 is about major findings, translation problems and tentative Solutions, and limitations.
