In 1927,the National Conservatory of Music, which is the predecessor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music(abbreviated as SCM),established the curriculum of the Erhu major in its national music department right from the very beginning of its founding. In the past century,SCM had its site relocated and its name changed for several times respectively amid social unrest and development, over the course of which, however, had not hindered the thriving development of erhu as a subject in SCM.To discuss the teaching and learning of erhu in SCM,this paper firstly analyzed the shape and structure of erhu to define the positioning of the instrument in the contemporary time, and classified the teaching of erhu into three progressive models by the three elements, which are teaching methods, teaching materials,as well as educational system and curriculum setting. Then this paper organized and introduced, one by one,the professional erhu instructors who have taught in SCM for a considerable period of time, and followed by introducing the relationship of intergenerational inheritance between them. The author holds that the teaching style is an expression of multiple meanings. This paper makes a concrete analysis of the styles and characteristics of the teaching of erhu in SCM by studying the overall presentations of the techniques, methods, teaching materials, forms of expression, musical composition, and student cultivation schemes adopted by different faculties and teaching staff roster in varying time frames.Ultimately, the author,as a participant of the “teaching and learning” process, with years of personal experience in erhu learning, specifically discussed the issues and inspirations she had encountered during the erhu learning process, hence providing a reflection and summary for some aspects of her past erhu learning.
