The folk culture of Old Beijing in the true sense is gradually disappearing along with the progress and development of the city.This study focuses on the Ghost Market(secret nocturnal market)of Old Beijing on the verge of distinction.Ghost Market should have been long gone with the consideration of its irregularity and geographic location at the political center.What makes it last so long?It is found in the survey that Ghost Market has become a memory field for people to be nostalgic and seek spiritual comfort in the process of history.The author tries to ask,in such memory space,how do people recall the past and how do they construct new memories so as to connect people and the relationship between people and space?At the same time,what is the essence behind the construction of Ghost Market memory?Guided by the above-mentioned thought,this paper adopts such methods as participatory observation and in-depth interview to investigate Ghost Market.Besides,by using theories including sociology,communication science,psychology,collective memory,and cultural memory,this paper analyzes people's cultural practice in Ghost Market so as to explain the peculiarity of the existence of the current Ghost Market,and exhibit the special meaning of Ghost Market for local residents.The study indicates that,in addition to the economic function,Ghost Market also contains the function of cultural inheritance,which,just like a"folk museum",points to the past and looks to the future.At the same time,Ghost Market has been given a new meaning in the new era,and it has become the Eden where people escape from reality,rebel aga:inst the current mainstream culture and find both identity and belonging.Ghost Market has also become a coupling of new things constructed by the memories of different parties in the process of resistance.This study is divided into four parts,taking Ghost Market as the medium used to arouse people's memory,and using reconstruction of people's old memory based on Ghost Town and the cultural connotation and essence that Ghost Market is bearing as the logic order.In Chapter One,it discusses Ghost Market as a memory medium from the perspective of the space of Ghost Market and the relationship between people and things;In Chapter Two,by taking people's cultural practice in Ghost Market as the basis,it explores"how to construct the cultural memory of Ghost Market from the perspective of operation,consumption,self writing and fight for survival"of Ghost Market;In Chapter Three,it extracts the connotation of the three dimensions,namely,"strengthening of national memory","self-cognition","Group identification and identity construction" in the aspect of searching for recognition and belonging in the process of memory construction;In Chapter Four,it analyzes reasons why people use Ghost Market for memory collection and emotion preservation,and explores the essence of memory construction.
