<Liberty Leading the People>is a classic work created by Delacroix,a giant of romanticism in the 19th century. This paper applies Panofsky's iconology method to explore the image language and ideological expression of the statue of liberty. The reason why I choose Panofsky's iconology is that this method is beyond the interpretation of the meaning of the work itself.According to Gombrich, what is handed down in history is the work, while the scheme is hidden. The intention of cracking the work is to reconstruct the lost scheme.Iconographic interpretation is the reconstruction of lost evidence, the process of spiritual re-engagement and re-creation.Moreover,this piece of evidence should not only help the imagist to determine the story represented by the image, but he also hopes to find out the meaning of the story according to the specific context. What we can know is that the allegorical female images of”freedom"began to appear during the French revolution.Delacroix was in such a background and had seen such forms before. So the author aims to use image study methods will Delacroix of the statue of liberty in the 18th century French social and cultural background, compared with the traditional image of the statue of liberty, she by different disciplines knowledge, the infiltration of perspective, the interdisciplinary way to study the image of the meaning of art, interpretation of the parable of the language of the statue of liberty new era.The practical value of this paper lies in the comparative interpretation of the meaning of"symbol"and"allegory"of Benjamin and Goethe, and the innovation of the comparison between the statue of liberty in"liberty guides the people”and the images of liberty in the former French republic, such as Marianne and Joan of arc.At the same time, the author quoted Baudelaire's concept of"modernity"to explain that Delacroix was inspired by"secularism"and put on the cloak of a new era for the goddess of liberty. Thus,it reveals how artists balance the contradictory relationship between"allegory"and "reality".
