A Grammar of the Chinese Language and Elements of Chinese Grammar are Chinese grammar monographs respectively written by Robert Morrison and Joshua Marshman. They were completed in 1815 and 1814.As pioneers in the study of Chinese grammar in Britain, the two works are of great significance to the establishment of Chinese grammar system.Meanwhile, the two works can be regarded as an importantturning point in the development of early Sinology in Britain. And they are the hallmarks of Sinology towards professionalism in Britain. These two works provide directions and models for the future study of British Sinology, especially Chinese grammar, and have important influences on the later study of Chinese by British missionaries. In order to explore the linguistic values and interrelationship of the two monographs, this thesis bases on the grammatical system of the two treatises, mainly adopting the methods of combination of description and interpretation, combination of synchronic and diachronic and comparative study, researching them from macroscopic and microcosmic perspectives. The writing of this paper is of positive significance to the history of Sinology in Europe, the history of Chinese teaching in the world, the history of Chinese grammar and the enrichment of the research results of the two works. This thesis is mainly divided into three parts:the introduction, the main body andthe conclusion. The first part of this thesis is the introduction, mainly introduces the research object, research status at home and abroad and research value about the selected topic. The main part of this thesis is from the second chapter to the seventh chapter, which mainly contrast the grammatical system of the two treatises from microscopic and macroscopic views. The second chapter introduces the life and works of the two authors, contrasting the frames of the two treatises. The third chapter contrasts the linguistic backgrounds of the two authors. The comparison investigates from two aspects, which are the linguistic backgrounds included in the two treatises and corpus selection. The two aspects are important to the formation of the two author's language view.Chapter Four is the core chapter of the full text, which makes a comparative study of the parts of speech systems of the two monographs. In contrast, with the standard of modern Chinese as a reference, and then analyses the correctness and inadequacies. The fifth chapter compares the syntactic studies of the two m onographs, focusing on the correct error of Chinese word order.Chapter Six analyses the theoretical basis of linguistics of the two authors and reveals their linguistic background.Chapter Seven examines the academic status and limitations of the two treatises by comparing them with Ma'Grammar.Chapter Eight is the conclusion, which summarizes the results of this study and points out the shortcomings.Based on the above research, the following conclusions can be drawn:1.In terms of parts of speech, the two treatises have similar division of parts of speech in Chinese, which are influenced by the Western grammar system.Compared with the predecessors, they paid more attention to the uniqueness of Chinese, providing an important reference for the later missionaries' study of Chinese. But inevitably, there are also some limitations.2.Syntactically,the two authors have noticed the importance of Chinese word order, which conforms to the reality of Chinese. On this basis,Marshman also explores Chinese word formation and the relationship between parts of speech and sentence components, which is more advanced than the predecessors.3.The two treatises are similar in age and theoretical basis. It is reasonable to have similar vie,Awpoints.A Grammar of the Chinese Language is a grammar monograph of spoken Chinese and Elements of Chinese Grammar is a grammar monograph of classical Chinese. They have different research priorities. Therefore, the author believes that there is no plagiarism between the two monographs, but there may be some references.
