Grammar of the Chinese Language is written by Wilhelm Lobscheid who was a Germany missionary and came China in 19 century. This is a Chinese Grammar text for the foreigners, especially in Yue dialect district. The book has complete structure, abundant content. In addition, it’s practical and interesting.Chapter one is an introduction, introducing the significance of the study. It is the first time that to research the book in the point of teaching Chinese as a second language. Then to sort the research on Wilhelm Lobscheid and his work from diachronic perspective. At last, the theories, mothods and literature resource which in this study are indicated.Chapter two has given a brief introduction of Wilhelm Lobscheid and his work, especially to make a discription of Grammar of the Chinese Language about background,content and structure. Pointing out that Grammar of the Chinese Language was compiled from lots of previous works and with the help of colleagues in the missionary. It’s comprehensive but not deep.Chapter three researches part of speech teaching in the book. Wilhelm Lobscheid devided Chinese words into 11 parts. He explained Chinese parts of speech with English grammar, focusing on the analysis the shape of Chinese words. And he was over-reliance on translation method, resulting in classification confusion. This chapter selects verb affixes, pronouns, function words "zhi" for case analysis.Chapter four is the Chinese grammar syntactic research. First of all, we analysis 339 complete sentences about their pattern, syntactical structure and category in Grammar of the Chinese Language, pointing out that the text was full of simple sentences and declarative sentence, but lack of complex sentences, special syntactical structure. Secondly, analysis and evaluate Grammar of the Chinese Language in the comparative sentence teaching, finding that type of comparative sentences are comprehensive and analysised clearly, but not enough to grasp the deep semantic, resulting in teaching bias. Finally to elaborate and evaluate Wilhelm Lobscheid’s views on Chinese word order, finding that Wilhelm Lobscheid fully recognized the importance and uniqueness of the Chinese word order, and use typical case models, analysis in rich organized, demonstrating the characteristics and laws of Chinese Word Order to the learners clearly.Chapter five is a conclusion, concluding the value and deficiencies of whole book.
