This is an English-Chinese translation project report on Environmentalism: An Evolutionary Approach by Douglas Spieles,an American professor of environmental studies at Denison University,of which Chapter 2 “Dimension of Environmentalism” is the source text.This book was published by Routledge in 2018.From a broader perspective,the book explains various environmental worldviews,including their origins,commonalities,points of contention,and their implications for the modern environmental movement.The author believes that environmental dilemmas are products of biological and sociocultural evolution,and through an understanding of evolution we can reframe debates of thought and action.As is known to all,nowadays environmental problem has become a matter of great urgency for us.The development and survival of human beings are closely related to the environment.The book chosen for this translation project is written in a unique and refreshing perspective and rich in content.Making an important contribution towards researches in environment protection,it has high value for translation and practice.In addition,it also helps people to improve environmental awareness and build a rich understanding of the relationship of humans and the environment,and highlights a way forward in our efforts to cope with the critical environmental issues of our time.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 is an introduction to the project,including its background,significance and structure of this translation report.Chapter 2 is an analysis to the source text,including the author introduction,publishing facts,main contents and features of the source text.The source text is categorized into the informative text.The translation of such a text should focus on accuracy and readability.In the process of analysis,the translator summarizes that the language in this book is concise,accurate and objective with clear logic and theory.The key to accomplishing the translation is commanding the language features of the text and using the translation techniques accordingly.Chapter 3 introduces the theoretical basis including the choosing,introduction and application of the translation theory.This report takes Nida's Functional Equivalence as its theoretical basis and with the translator's own translation practice and typical examples she explores its guiding role in the translation process.In Chapter 4,based on the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory and the comparison between English and Chinese language differences,the translator analyzes the key points and difficulties in translation practice by using translation techniques such as conversion,concretization,inversion,division,drawing close members of sentence,etc.so as to make the translation conform to the expression habits of the target language.Chapter 5 concludes what the translator gains from the report and those unsolved problems.The translator hopes that this report would provide more useful information for Chinese scholars and students studying environmental issues.
