Report On Translation Of Research Design Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This translation report mainly talks about the translation process and strategy of academic works. The translation task is to translate part of Research Design Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches. The source text introduces in detail research method including qualitative and quantitative ones, and also tells the relevant procedures of conducting researches. Nida's functional equivalence theory guides the translation process from the beginning to the end. The translation report analyzes the features of the original text, describes the difficulties met in the translation and the translation process, and discovers the solutions to the difficulties. The difficulties in translation arise from the differences between the two language systems. The original text and target text have different stylistic features. In the case of vocabulary, the original text tends to use noun phrases instead of verb phrases. Besides, there are tremendous professional terms in the text. In terms of syntax, there are many complex sentence and compound sentence. As to the grammar, the author tends to use passive voice to maintain the objectiveness and preciseness of the text. Under the general guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, some translation skills have been used in the translation, including splitting the long sentences into short ones, adjusting the order of different components of the sentences, changing the part of the speech and so on. What's more, re-translation after finishing the translation is very helpful to improve the quality of the translation. After a period of consideration, I find something which can be improved in my translation, so I revise the original translation. By using necessary translation skills, the translation aims to achieve the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text, provide experiences and lessons for future reference, and enrich the theory and practice relating to Nida' functional equivalence to some extent.
