The painstaking novel Gao Xing cost Jia Pingwa three years to complete, during which his manuscript was changed six times. This book vividly describes the modernization process of contemporary China. The protagonist Happy Liu is indomitable in the face of miserable fate and courageous in pursuit of happiness.Happiness is the ultimate goal that all people pursue. On this point,Jia Pingwa's works are attractive to all readers. From Jia Pingwa's works, readers can deeply feel the Chinese story and spirit.Introducing Jia Pingwa's works will surely enhance the popularity of Chinese culture among western countries. At present, few researches were made on this novel.Through this thesis, the author hopes to draw attention of some scholars to study its English version and make some contribution to enhance the popularity of Chinese culture among western countries. As an extremely influential representative of local literature,Jia Pingwa's works are endowed with a distinctive personal style and filled with strong cultural characteristics of Shaanxi. In his work Gao Xing, there are also a large number of culture-loaded terms that clearly reflect the social customs of Shaanxi and the outlook of China. With the proposal of The Belt and Road Initiative,Chinese literature has begun to move out of the country to the world.Translation has turned into a bridge between Chinese literature and the world.Culture-loaded terms embody the cultural information carried by language and reflect the cultural features of society. They often appear in Chinese literary works. However, due to the differences between Chinese and Western languages and cultures, how to accurately convey the rich cultural connotations contained in these culture-loaded terms to the target language readers has become a problem for translators. The thesis is based on the English translated version by the famous British sinologist Nicky Harman.Under the framework of the cultural schema theory, the author will explore translation strategies adopted by the translator in translating culture-loaded terms under three situations of Chinese and English cultural schemata, namely, cultural schema correspondence, cultural schema default and cultural schema conflict.Through qualitative analysis and case study, the author finds that the translator took full account of the acceptability of the target language and retained the style of the original text appropriately in translating the culture-loaded terms. In the process of translation, the translator adopted the strategies of domestication and foreignization. And various translation methods, such as literal translation, literal translation plus explanation, literal translation plus transliteration, transliteration, transliteration plus explanation, liberal translation were combined to activate and adjust the preexisting cultural schema of the target language readers or even create a new cultural schema for them.In this way,the target language readers get a better understanding of the source text and the cultural connotation of the source text is also successfully conveyed.
