From the cultural perspective of globalization, an obvious trend shows up in thedomestic field of translation and interpretation research: people are paying moreattention to cultural transition which brings about more mutual understanding andmutual implantation of two cultures. During the annual NPC and CPPCC session, thelanguage of speakers carries plenty of culture-loaded expressions (CLEs), includingproverbs, idioms and other phrases with abundant cultural information, which onlyseems to prove the value of this research trend.Based on the previous ideas and research about CLEs and schema theory, theauthor made a comparative study of Chinese and English cultural schema anddivided their relationship into three categories: gap of cultural schema, overlap ofcultural schema and conformity of cultural schema.The main research question of this thesis is that how interpreters deal with theculture-loaded expressions in their interpretation? Specifically, the researchquestions include: what is the general situation of the professional and studentinterpreters’ use of strategies for interpreting culture-loaded expressions; whatspecific strategies do professional interpreters and student interpreters userespectively to the handle culture-loaded expressions and what suggestions can beprovided for interpreting culture-loaded expressions based on cultural schema? Toanswer these questions, the author collected the tape-recorded materials of speechescontaining CLEs which were made by Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign MinisterYang Jiechi during press conferences in recent years and had MTI students, subjectsof the research, do verisimilar consecutive interpreting of the author’s chosenexcerpts.According to the research, student and professional interpreters vary a lot inusing strategies to deal with CLEs. For lack of theory related knowledge andawareness of cultural background, student interpreters used strategies unproperlyand failed to convey cultural connotation exactly quite often. The author madedetailed analysis of student and professional interpreters’ interpretation from theperspective of the three corresponding relationship between Chinese and Englishcultural schema, based on which she provides two suggestions to interpret CLEs:zero introduction of cultural schema and introduction of new cultural schema.
