| The21stcentury world has stepped into an era of multi-polarity, economicglobalization and cultural diversity, and thus requires countries to enhanceunderstanding and cooperation. Against this backdrop, oral interpretation is crucial inbridging communication among peoples.China’s influence on the world is growing owing to the strong momentum of itssocial transformation and economic growth. As China is actively engaged ininternational affairs, many countries are eager to know more about China, and Chinais equally eager to embrace the world.Official press conferences are important venues for countries to better understandeach other and to avoid misperceptions and miscalculations. Each year, the Chinesegovernment hosts press conferences at sessions of the NPC and the CPPCC and onother important occasions, during which interpreters are constantly faced with thechallenges of interpreting Chinese culture-loaded expressions. Since this dauntingtask often overwhelms many interpretation trainees, the author of this thesis attemptsto use Schema Theory to probe into the ways of interpreting culture-loadedexpressions, which include Chinese sayings, proverbs, lines of poetry, allusions tohistory, slang, four-character idioms, as well as expressions used in political andeconomic fields with clear-cut Chinese characteristics.The data for discussion in this thesis are from nine press conferences held byformer Premier Zhu Rongji, Premier Wen Jiabao, and former Foreign Minister LiZhaoxing from1998to2012. Using Schema Theory, the author examined andanalyzed the methods used by professional interpreters in interpreting culture-loadedexpressions, with the aim of exploring the relations between Cultural Schema Theoryand the interpretation of Chinese culture-loaded expressions.As a result of this exploration, it is hoped that certain guidance can be providedto deal with culture-loaded expressions in field interpreting, which could shed light onthe improvement of interpretation quality. |
