This paper is not to inquire into the nature of "death",but to explore the different concepts of death conceived in the cultural background of each period,and then to explore the relationship between the cultural context of each period and the holding and evolution of death paintings conceived in the concept of death.The first part of the thesis expounds the current research status of western death paintings,It mainly includes several master's thesis and some monographs on death aesthetics and culture at home and abroad related to this topic;The second part discusses the understanding and concept of death and the relationship between life and death in western culture,it mainly discusses the will of life and fear of death,so as to cut into the spiritual expression-death theme painting.The third part discusses the death theme paintings and the development and evolution of paintings under different historical backgrounds.Taking time as the vertical axis,it specifically discusses the death thoughts in different cultural contexts of different periods and the corresponding "death" theme paintings,and studies the integration of paintings in its historical cultural background.In addition,death paintings are classified according to their characteristics and compared and analyzed among various types,and the emergence and characteristics of various types of paintings are discussed.Clarify the development and evolution of the painting according to the painting factors such as the topic selection,composition and expression techniques;The fourth part is to discuss its value according to the characteristics of this particular painting,and summarize and conclude its aesthetic characteristics and aesthetic significance according to the characteristics of death paintings in various periods.
