As globalization and informatization have swept the world,China has more chances to exchange and cooperate with other countries and regions in science and technology.Today, when traffic demands grow, the construction and improvement of highways play more and more important roles in promoting social and economic development. The translation of scientific and technical texts related to highway construction contributes to the exchanges and cooperation in the road industry among different countries. The road feasibility study report,as an important part of the preliminary work of a project construction,is the main basis for the decision-makers to approve the construction project and to make important decisions, and it relates to every aspect of the design and construction of a project. Therefore, the translation of road feasibility study report is of great importance to the development of road industry as well as the progress of social economy. With the progress of society and the development of economy, the demand for the translation of such texts has increased continuously. However, such translation study is still waiting to be deepened and improved.Based on Verschueren's adaptation theory, this translation report uses excerpts from Feasibility Study Report for Construction of the Section:Surcin-Obrenovac as translation and research material, aiming at analyzing and summarizing the translation methods and skills that the translator used in the translation practice. The adaptation theory is a pragmatic theory put forward by Jef Verschueren with four key notions:the making of linguistic choices, the variability, the negotiability and the adaptability. He also proposed four angles of investigation for pragmatic descriptions and pragmatic interpretations of linguistic phenomenon, which are the contextual correlates of adaptability, the structural objects of adaptability, the dynamics of adaptability, and the salience of the adaptation processes.Since the adaptation theory was introduced into China, many Chinese scholars have applied it to the translation field. The theory has brought translation into a coherent and unified framework and it exerts a significant guiding function towards the translation practice.According to the linguistic features of the road feasibility study report, the translator adopted adaptation theory to guide this translation practice,in order to find the appropriate translation strategies to solve the problems encountered in the translation process. The translation practice report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one includes the introduction of the translation material, the literature review and the research objectives and significance.Chapter two analyzes the linguistic features of the road feasibility study report on lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. The linguistic features make it necessary for the translator to use appropriate skills and methods to deal with problems in the translation.Chapter three gives a brief introduction of Verschueren's adaptation theory and its four investigation angles as well as its guiding significance in the translation practice.Chapter four uses specific examples from the road feasibility study report to analyze in detail the translation skills and adaptation strategies adopted by the translator, under the guidance of adaptation theory and on the basis of the linguistic features of road feasibility study report.Chapter five makes a conclusion on the whole translation report and this translation practice. It is hoped that the review and summary of this translation practice will promote the future translation work of the translator and provide new thoughts and practical advice for other related researchers.
