Low Cost Emergency Water Purification Technologies,is a scientific book on emergency water treatment technologies,published by Elsevier Science Publishers in April,2014.In the book,a variety of effective,safe,reliable and low cost water purification technologies are introduced,which can help the victims get access to drinkable water after the natural disasters,such as floods,earthquake,tsunamis and hurricanes.The translator excerpted the first three chapters of the book as the ST to carry out the English to Chinese(E-C)translation practice,and finally accomplished this report.In this report,the author firstly introduces the background,purpose and significance of the selected translation material,describes the whole translation procedure and analyzes the linguistic features of EST.Then the adaptation theory put forward by Verschueren from Belgium is introduced,which argues that the process of language use is actually a process of language choice and adaptation.Also,three key notions in adaptation theory,namely,variability,negotiability and adaptability are expounded.On the basis of adaptability,the theory of linguistic adaptation explains the language using from the following four aspects:contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability.On this account,the author combines the adaptation theory with the English-Chinese translation process of EST,and puts forward a new perspective for the study of EST translation.Within the framework of adaptation theory,the author analyzes the guiding role of adaptation theory in EST translation with examples in translation practice.Attaching importance to the linguistic structural adaptation,the author interprets it at the levels of lexicon,syntax and text,and puts forward corresponding translation strategies.
