In the 1930s,Shostakovich constantly explored creative composing techniques and musical styles, drew widely on the experience of schools of western modern music, and created a series of works of different genres, with the attempt of expressing the new theme of revolutions with new composing skills and styles. On the basis of the theory and methodology of music materials, this paper investigates three symphonies which are representative of his period to probe into the modern composing techniques in his works, which are then compared with the ones adopted by Russian avant-garde composers(Denisov,Schnittky,Gubaidurina)to see how Shostakovich's works influenced the Avant-garde composers and then to explore how Russian Avant-garde music has developed in the 20th century. This paper is divided into five sections and four chapters. The introduction introduces the rationale for choosing this topic, researches at home and abroad, research methodology, the social and historical background of the former Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s,and Shostakovich's compositions during this period.Chapter 1 focuses on the core materials adopted in his works from the two dimensions of pitch and rhythm;Chapter 2 elaborates on the development of materials,i.e.procedures,and explores the strategies of formal methods for the development of materials in three works from three perspectives:acoustic texture, tonality and organizational procedures.;Chapter 3 examines the structure of materials, including the macrostructure which is reflected from the texture pattern and the contour of the work, and the multi-level structure which is formed by the non-synchronous combination of various elements of microstructure;based on the research results of the first three chapters,Chapter 4 explores the relationship between Shostakovich and Russian Avant-garde composers from three aspects:pitch organization, sound technology, collage style, and tries to grasp how Russian avant-garde music has developed. The conclusion consists of a summary and personal opinions.
