Characters' speech/thought representation in novels is viewed as an important skill and narrative strategy for shaping the character image and promoting the development of the plot.Free indirect speech is an important means of character speech and thought representation, especially in the stream of consciousness novels. With the emergence of cognitive stylistics, free indirect speech has become an important research object of scholars, and deixis as the main carrier of free indirect speech is more concerned by relevant scholars. And deixis are ubiquitous linguistic phenomena and have a non-negligible role in free indirect speech. In the wake of cognitive linguistic, cognitive deixis is a new kind of deixis which play a great part in the understanding of free indirect speech and describing the inner thoughts of the characters. In the past studies on free indirect speech, many scholars have studied the form features and stylistic effects of free indirect speech, however, rarely studied how the evaluative words obtain special pragmatic effects in free indirect speech in cognitive deixis.Based on this situation,in the framework of cognitive linguistic and cognitive stylistics, the dissertation is to analyze the effect of cognitive deixis, such as evaluative adjectives or adverbs, modality, exclamatives and deixis of viewpoint with the deictic shift theory and possible world theory as theoretical basis. This article focuses on researching the following three aspects:Firstly, this paper attempts to analyze the evaluative adjectives and evaluative adverbs, and finds that the evaluative words in the free indirect quotations express the inner feelings of the characters in the text, not the author's views. It sets background for readers and helps readers involved in the text world. This has a grasp on the understanding of the text and the theme. The irreplaceable role,in which the authors found on the basis of the deictic shift theory, they showed the inner thoughts of the protagonist.Secondly, through the application of modality in free indirect speech, this paper sums up the usage of modality and exclamatives, analyzes that it retains the originalform of direct speech in free indirect speech, which presents the inner feelings of the character and indicates the personal emotions of authors or narrators, and also leads to the conversion of specific forms of free indirect quotations. Finally, this paper takes the third function into consideration, that is shift of viewpoint. From the perspective of time and space, narrative point of view and the shift of temporal point of view,it helps to grasp the characteristics of the interjection and the inner heart of the author or the character in understanding the free indirect speech,so as to have a deeper understanding of the inner part of the character. All in all, this study applies the deictic shift analysis framework to the cognitive deixis in free indirect speech, and proves that it has a special pragmatic meaning in the free indirect speech that indicates the inner thoughts and emotions of the characters.Meanwhile,it also helps readers have a comprehensive understanding of the characters individuality. On one hand, the effect not only helps to better read and understand the works, but also helps the reader to stand in the perspective of the characters, thus achieving a complete experience and improving the stylistic effects when reading literary works. On the other hand, the research in this paper has broadened the application scope of cognitive deixis to some extent.
