The book,Wales-China 250 Years of History, tells historical stories of Welsh living in China, unveiling perspectives of Welsh seeing China. As a result, translating this book can hopefully strengthen cultural exchange between China and Wales. The book belongs to historical text. The excerpts of this translation project have over10,000 words. The thesis discusses the function of background knowledge of historical text in the process of translating.Through the understanding and expression process, the author analyzes her translation practice from lingual schema, cultural schema, and stylistic schema to find corresponding translation methods. This thesis consists of four parts.Chapter One introduces the task description, including the project background, project introduction per se and the organization of the report.Chapter Two describes process description, including preparation before translation, translating process and proofreading of the project.Chapter Three presents case analyses from the perspective of schema transfer, including lingual, cultural and stylistic schemata,in an attempt to figure out translation methods to transfer those three schemata.Chapter Four goes to the conclusion of the thesis, which summarizes findings and limitations of the translation project. It has been proved through practice that a target text cannot be rated as a successful one until related schemata have been fully activated. To fulfill this target, the author has employed transliteration, adding footnotes, specifying pronouns and other translation methods to transfer lingual, cultural and stylistic schemata from English to Chinese. The report, under the guidance of schemata theory, summarizes relevant translation methods of historical texts. The author hopes it would offer some inspiration for the future translation practice of historical texts.
