Exploration Of The Generality Of Emotional And Non-Emotional Conflict Processing:ERP Study

Conflict control reflects how to extract task-related information and suppress task-irrelevant information in the process of information processing.Which is modulated by the relative proportion of congruent and incongruent trials,with high proportions of congruent trials leading to large interference effects,i.e.,the proportion congruency(PC)effect.The PC reflects the adjustment of cognitive strategies.It is found that the PC effect is a good indicator for exploration of the generality of multiple types of conflicts.If the PC effect of one conflict task can change another conflict task,the two conflict tasks are domain-specific,that is,there is a common processing mechanism to process the two conflicts,and vice versa,they are domain-specific.According to the types of interference information,conflict can be divided into emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict(cognitive conflict).Emotional conflict reflects that task-irrelevant emotional stimuli interfere with emotional target tasks,while non-emotional conflict reflects that neutral stimuli interfere with non-emotional target tasks.In recent years,many scholars have compared emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict tasks in two separate tasks,and found that emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict processing may involve the same and different brain regions.But in complex and changeable cognitive environments,we often deal with multiple conflict information at the same time,which may involve both emotional and non-emotional conflicts.In view of the controversy in the study of emotional and non-emotional multiple conflicts and the lack of neurological mechanisms.In this study,the task that integrated word-face emotional Stroop and Simon were used to study the processing and domain characteristics of emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict based on ERP technology.In experiment 1,two Simon congruency context conditions(MC: 75% congruent trials,MI: 25% congruent trials)were set to observe whether PC effect appeared in Simon conflict and whether this effect appeared in non-operational proportional emotional tasks.In experiment 2,two kinds of emotional congruency context conditions(MC: 75% congruent trials,MI: 25% congruent trials)were set to observe whether PC effect appeared in emotional conflict and whether this effect appeared in non-operational proportional Simon tasks.The behavioral evidence of Experiment 1 demonstrated that Simon conflict has PC effect,the Simon conflict effect in MC context is larger than that in MI context.For EEG data,the PC effect of Simon conflict is mainly reflected in the P580-680 of conflict resolution and reaction processing,which shows that the amplitude difference between incongruent Simon and congruent Simon is greater in MC context.Emotional conflict has only emotional congruency effect on behavior and EEG,but no PC effect.The results of Experiment 2 show that there is PC effect in the behavior of emotional conflict,which shows that the effect of emotional conflict in MC background is greater than that in MI background.On EEG,the PC effect of emotional conflict is mainly reflected in P700-900,which shows that the amplitude difference of incongruent emotion and congruent emotion in MC context is greater than that in MI context.Simon conflict only had Simon congruency effect on behavior and EEG,but no PC effect.According to the results of Experiment 1 and experiment 2,we found that there was intra-task PC effect between emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict,but no inter-task PC effect was found.The PC effect of emotional conflict and non-emotional conflict was mainly manifested in conflict resolution and selection stage(Emotion: P700-900;Simon: P580-680).This study demonstrates that under the condition of emotional and non-emotional multiple conflicts,individuals can produce independent emotional and non-emotional conflicts,and can also produce PC effect within tasks.Secondly,for different conflict context conditions,non-emotional congruency background only affects non-emotional conflict,not emotional conflict;emotional congruency conflict background only affects emotional conflict,not non-emotional conflict.This study proves that emotional and non-emotional conflicts are domain-specific in multiple conflict situations.
