Due to the rapid development of China's economy,more and more overseas students choose to study in China.In order to help international students get through the cultural shock period as soon as possible,in 2017,the Ministry of Education issued a document stating that universities should offer "Chinese Profile" courses for international students to better adapt to their daily study and life in China.However,the author found in the process of teaching practice that the teaching mode and teaching content of this course can not stimulate the learning motivation of foreign students,and the teaching effect is not ideal.Therefore,in order to respond to the country's call and enhance foreign exchanges and cooperation,this paper attempts to improve the teaching of the "China Profile" course to seek to apropriate for the learner's learning needs and learning methods to achieve the desired results.This article takes the international students of the "China Profile" course taught by the author as the research object,and tries to use the ARCS motivation theory model as the basis for teaching improvement action research,with classroom observation,questionnaire survey,classroom recording,semi-structured interview,Homework and teaching journals are used as collection tools for research and data to explore how to motivate and sustain learners' motivation for the course.In this action study,the author found through questionnaires that the current situation of the "China Profile" course has the following characteristics:First,the students think that the content learned in the class is not practical,and the relevance to their future career or life is weak;Lack of fun.The teaching content is thick and thin,and the connection with students is weak,and the students' enthusiasm for learning is not high.The teaching method is traditional and single.Although the students have no opinions,the survey finds that they are more inclined to experience the learning style of culture.Third,the number of study groups is unreasonable.Too many people in the group can't effectively improve the students' learning level,so students can't get satisfaction from group work.Fourth,most students hold external motivation for the study of this course.Although some students express their curiosity about Chinese culture,the textbook content cannot meet their deep needs.According to these characteristics,the author demonstrates that the experiential teaching based on the ARCS motivation theory model is in line with the current situation of the "China Overview" course teaching and helps to stimulate and maintain the learning motivation of international students,and has developed a rich teaching method to match the learning needs and stimulate An action plan to maintain motivation for learning.The specific action implementation steps are:according to the application steps of the ARCS motivation theory model,collecting course and student information,analyzing the learning needs and the current situation of the teaching materials;formulating a teaching improvement action plan;clearing and refining the learning objectives before the event,and selecting the individual level according to the individual level Challenge the project,report on the study after the event,and finally the teacher will investigate the effect of the activity.After analyzing the classroom observations,questionnaires,semi-structured interviews,homework and learning reports,the main results of this action study are:students' participation in classrooms is improved,students have acquired practical and practical cultural knowledge,and learners learn self-confidence.Enhance,learners' satisfaction with the course increases.After eight weeks of action research,we conclude that the ARCS motivation theory model is applicable to the teaching of the "China Profile" course for international students.The research results are as follows:First,this research is conducive to the improvement of teachers' teaching and research capabilities;This research effectively stimulates and maintains the motivation of learners of the China Profile course.Thirdly,this study is a useful exploration of the application of ARCS motivation theory model in Chinese as a second language.This study takes the teaching of "Overview of China" as an example,and analyzes the feasibility and effectiveness of ARCS motivation theory model in teaching Chinese as a second language.Under the framework of action research,it tries to stimulate and maintain learners' motivation.And analyze the factors affecting the motivation of learning,and provide reference for the improvement of the teaching mode of Chinese as a second language.It also helps us to observe,understand and study the learning motivation of learners from different perspectives.Better apply it to instructional design.
