Community interpreting is a complex social activity.Like medical interpreting, court interpreting or class interpreting,it happens in our daily life.It facilitates the communication between the involved parties who speak different languages.Different types of community interpreting become familiar as China grows more internationalized. Many scholars have achieved significant results in community interpreting-or community interpreter-related research, but the research on class interpreting is rare to see. This report focuses on the author’s experience as a class interpreter in the National Ballet of China. It uses Bourdieu’s sociology, mainly its three basic concepts, namely field, habitus and capital,to explore the community interpreter’s self-perception through the three stages of an interpreting assignment:pre-interpreting,while-interpreting and post-interpreting.The author finds that the established habitus and capitals are crucial for the entrance to a new field in the preparatory phase. And adequate preparation is indispensable to a successful interpreting result.During interpreting, different strategies should be used. Those previous habitus should be followed at times and broke at others.Even new habitus should be formed to better accomplish this task.Besides, the ability of learning while interpreting is of great importance. After interpreting, the mistakes and imperfections are mainly due to the lack of specific capitals. And the accumulated capitals pave the way for the next interpreting assignment. This report makes suggestions for the further studies on the self-perception of community interpreters. It is hoped that interpreters can have a better understanding of the whole picture of community interpreting and can be clearer about their interpreting tasks so as to avoid some fallacies.
