With the development of globalization, the need for translation and interpreting is growing.Over the past several decades, related studies from a number of different perspectives have revealed the complex demands on interpreters and the multi-faceted role they must be prepared to play.In this area, there are more studies through the linguistic and cultural lens than those from the perspective of sociology. On the sociological level, the sociology of Bourdieu stands out as the most influential framework. He developed three concepts namely habitus, capital and field, which are quite useful in analyzing and understanding social processes in different societies. These concepts have proved attractive to scholars studying translation and interpreting activities. This report, based on the sociology of Bourdieu, aims to conclude some practice experience and provide practical suggestions for interpreter-trainees.The analysis of concrete practice examples is the most important part of this report. All the examples are carefully selected from the transcript of the author’s practice,an on-site interpreting of the lecture Narrative and Worldviews.By applying the concepts of habitus, capital and field in the analysis, the author points out some places needed to be improved.Lacking good habitus and related cultural capital and being unfamiliar with the interpreting field are the problems.Following the analysis, the author also puts forward some practical suggestions in the framework of the three concepts. The author holds the view that the interpreter could facilitate the communication process by improving the habitus, accumulating more cultural capital and getting more familiar with the interpreting field. This report puts the interpreting activities in a larger social context.By analyzing the interpreting practice from a sociological point of view, the author focuses on a micro-field in particular, finds the problems in interpreting practice, and hopes to make some improvements in the future practice. The author also concludes the practice experience and aims to provide some help for interpreter-trainees.
