A Corpus-based Study On Zhang Lu's Interpreting Style In Government Press Conference

With the progress of the times and the globalization of the economy,interpreting activities become more and more frequent,more and more scholars begin to turn their attention to interpreting studies.However,there are few studies on interpreters' style.Zhang Lu,recognized as an excellent translator in China,has served as an interpreter for many national leaders in government press conferences more than any other interpreters.Studying Zhang Lu's interpreting style plays an important role in interpreting research and promoting the development of interpretation.Taking corpora as the research tools,this research attempts to study Zhang Lu's interpreting style in the government press conference from perspectives of linguistic,paralinguistic,phonetic and strategies features with the methodology of comparative study.Comparisons are made with interpreters Lei Ning's and Fei Shengchao's interpreting first,then with the comparative corpus—the UN conference records.From the perspective of linguistic features,datum like types,tokens,STTR,lexical density,ratios of nouns and verbs and length of sentences are collected.Comparing these features with Lei's and Fei's interpreting texts and comparative corpus.The paper finds that Zhang Lu has a richer vocabulary and a higher lexical density.She adds more nouns and uses less verbs and longer sentences.Linguistic features in Zhang Lu's interpreting are roughly the same as those in the comparative corpora--the UN conference records.Therefore,Zhang's interpreting is of high acceptance.From the perspective of paralinguistic and phonetic features,Zhang's speed and tones are all moderate between Lei and Fei.China's attitude on some hot issues are clearly declared.At the same time,she has also provided a good impetus for the promotion of China's "major country diplomacy" policy and successfully created a warm and friendly but never weak image of our country.From the perspective of interpreting strategies features,the research shows that Zhang Lu has made the translation clearer and more understandable by making necessary deviation to the original text.Besides,Zhang's translation is more faithful to the source text,for her ratio of semantic deviation is less than that of the other 2 interpreters.Although the original text of each year is not the same,the two premiers' talking style are different,Zhang's interpreting features tend to be the same from each aspect,which shows that Zhang Lu's interpreting style is very stable.On the one hand,Zhang Lu has good political quality,solid language skills,wide knowledge and stable psychological quality.On the other hand,Zhang Lu,as an interpreter of the press conferences of the two sessions,must accurately convey the principles and policies of the country.Zhang Lu is not only an interpreter,but also an agent of the Chinese government and a transmitter of the image of China.This study is of significance in helping interpreters to find ways to establish good relations with the audience,more clearly interpreting the voice of China,so as to show the image of China.
