Grammar learning is an indispensable part of English learning,but it is also boring for many teachers and students.However,the language lacking grammar is inaccurate and unable to express meaning,which shows the importance of grammar.Through practice,we can consolidate grammar knowledge,understand the meaning of grammar and know how to use grammar in contexts.Therefore,grammar practice in English textbooks deserves in-depth study.The purpose of this paper is to study the design of grammar practice of the compulsory edition in PEP Senior English textbook.This study chooses Module 1 to Module 5 as the research object,and mainly studies the design of grammar exercises in five textbooks.Content analysis is the main method to research on grammar exercises in this study.In this study,the author intends to answer the following two questions: 1)What are the major types of grammar exercises in PEP Senior English textbook from the perspective of grammaring? 2)What are the characteristics of the design of grammar exercises in PEP Senior English textbook?Grammaing was put forward by Larsen-Freeman.She believes that grammar should not be regarded as a set of static rules,but as a skill,referring to “the ability to use grammar structures accurately,meaningfully,and appropriately”.The research shows that the result of the design of grammar exercises in textbooks from the perspective of grammaringis that grammar exercises can be divided into three categories:focus-on-form with the meaning completely given,focus-on-form with the meaning partially given,and focus-on-form without given meaning respectively.The grammar exercises in the textbooks focus more onfocus-on-form with the meaning completely given,but less on focus-on-form without given meaning.The characteristics of the design of grammar exercises in PEP Senior English textbook include: focusing on sentence formation,plenty use of oral practice in forms of pair work and group work,relating exercises to situations and students? real life,being good at offering scaffolding,being involved in productive activitiesand being interesting.
