The most distinctive feature of the 1980 s Korean art was the emergence of ‘MIN JOONG ART' that focused on expressing the reality of the Korean society in a more realistic manner. In the 1960 s and 1970 s,the Korean art scene implicitly sympathized with the authoritarian government by sticking to a modern formalism approach such as ‘informal' and ‘minimalism.' Under these situations, the appearance of new arts under the theme of ‘reality' was related to the economic, political changes that the Korean society experienced in the 1980 s.This is similar to Chinese new woodcut movement, which represents ‘realism' that had emerged in a time of chaos caused by foreign invasions and conflicts between two sides.Since both had similar backgrounds, both art movements were closely related to social criticism and demonstrations, and the ‘MIN JOONG ART' movement has found their precedent in other third world countries such as Mexico and China.Such lessons learned from the third world art movements worked as a good reference for artists of the ‘MIN JOONG ART' movement. The new woodcut movement, which was led under the leadership of Lu Xun to avoid oppression from the government, was introduced to Korea through underground routes.Especially,Korean artists such as Oh Yoon(1946-1986)and Yoo Hong-Joon(1949-),both the member of ‘Reality and Voice',played a big role in the introduction and acception of the movement in the Korean art society.Based on the facts mentioned above,I thought that it would be meaningful to clarify that the new woodcut movement had a significant influence on the form of art and movement method of the ‘MIN JOONG ART' movement. Therefore, this paper selected this subject to identify the influence of the Chinese new woodcut movement on the Korean ‘MIN JOONG ART' movement and the difference and commonalities between the two movements:?The new woodcut movement's influence on the ‘MIN JOONG ART' movement?...
