Exchange on education is a powerful driving force for education development of all countries and regions. Moreover,it is a matter of vital importance to improve the international competitiveness and intercultural communication. The translation of texts on teaching plays an irreplaceable role therein.Although there are numerous translated books on teaching,evidence-informed reference books are seldom seen on the market. In view of this, the report selects the fifth and sixth parts from The Truth About Teaching:An evidence-informed guide for new teachers written by Greg Ashman,Head of Mathematics at Ballarat Clarendon College,as the source text.In this book, the author reveals the truth about teaching by presenting major ideas teachers need to grasp in the early stages of their career, providing a train of evidence supporting these ideas, and challenging some of the myths about what good teaching really is.The fifth part primarily makes an introduction to the definition of explicit teaching, its evidence supporting its effectiveness and practical suggestions for applying explicit teaching strategies in class. The sixth highlights the alternatives to explicit teaching and its evidence. The translation enables domestic education practitioners to draw on the education achievements of other countries, combine them with the actual situation in China to effectively promote Chinese educational cause. The book is also of practical significance to new teachers on their teaching practice as it provides solutions to some specific problems in teaching. The difficulties lie in the translation of proper nouns and long and complex sentences.Under the guidance of the “cooperative principle” by H.P.Grice,the translator overcame the difficulties by resorting to translation techniques such as extension, restructuring, addition and conversion, and strives to achieve an effective communication between the target reader and the author of the source text.
