China has been vigorously encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, generating a startup fever among the public. However, the path of starting up a business and keeping it going is never easy.As the Jews has long been appreciated for doing well in operating business, the translator selects this academic paper written by Hershey H.Friedman in order to provide some enlightenment for the Chinese people, especially the businesspersons. This paper demonstrates the Talmudic approach to becoming wealthy, focusing on business ethics. So the aim of translating the paper is to reveal the real Jewish thinking and wisdom concealed in the Jewish cannon by introducing the Jewish business ethics so that the Chinese people can benefit from it.The language of the source text is overall plain and popular as its grammar is not very complicated, but its context filled with philosophical words from the Bible and the Talmud,is largely related to Judaism and Jewish culture, which adds some difficulties to translation. Moreover, the source text is rather colloquial as conversations are rich, which requires the translator to adjust the language style of the target text in a proper way. Therefore, the translator chooses Reiss' s text typology to analyze the text type and text function of the source text and Vermeer's skopos theory,to be more specific, the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule under the skopos theory to guide the translation in hopes of generating a fluent, comprehensible and relatively formal target text.
