The source text of this translation,Prevention is Better than Cure,is taken from the tenth chapter, the third part of Domestic Violence and Criminal Justice,by Lee.E.Ross,a seasoned criminal justice scholar. From the perspective of public health, the source text mainly describes how to respond to treat and prevent domestic violence and discusses how each phase of the model applies to domestic violence situations.Generally speaking, prevention includes a wide range of intervention activities. Moreover, the scholar provides a comprehensive re-evaluation of social factors and conditions that give rise to domestic violence, and personal insights on the role of education as a proactive approach to prevent domestic violence.Since domestic violence has extended to nearly every corner of the earth, therefore, the original text is of great importance for public awareness.Peter Newmark believes that the translation of an informative text should focus on the target language to truthfully and smoothly convey the information of the source text. The translation method should attempt to produce on target language readers the equivalent effect to that on the readers of the original.Accordingly, the report employs communicative translation theory as guidance to analyze translating difficulties with some examples. As to the translation of proper nouns, transliteration, literal translation and the mixture of the two methods are adopted. For the translation of long and complicated sentences, translation skills like inversion, division and addition are applied in the report. Finally, this report ends with the conclusion, including enlightenment and problems to be solved.
