Documentary Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Communication Science:

With the development of international cultural exchanges,researchers are paying more attention to AVT and its sub-field subtitle translation.Current studies mostly focus on hit movies or TV series,but research on other kinds of movie and TV works,including documentary,has also started and produced important results.In terms of theory application,researchers tend to apply functional equivalence theory or skopos theory to subtitle translation.Others are not given enough attention.This thesis tries to study documentary subtitle translation from the perspective of communication science,based on the two Chinese translations of Deutschland von oben 1.The theories of communication science cover all the elements of information transmission.The translation process,as a special kind of information transmission,can be discussed more comprehensively from this perspective.In the case study,the author compares the two Chinese translations of Deutschland von ohen 1.Translation strategies are examined,while taking elements such as the translator,information and noise,and audience in account.The author also analyses what strengthens or weakens the communication effect.The thesis has following findings:The translators behave as gatekeeper,controlling what the audience receives by retaining or deleting information;The information transmission is accompanied by the noise.This unwanted noise is abated or separated by translators through adding redundancy or converting information;The audience are receivers of the translated subtitle.In order to meet their expectation and realize effective information transmission,the translators employ four-character structure,adjust the translation to the audience and take efforts to produce aesthetic expressions;Information of high credibility and correct transmission strategies can strengthen the communication effect,while mistranslation leads to misunderstanding and weaken the effect.
