| As an audio-visual product recording the physical reality,documentary features an objective,sincere and neutral recording style.A documentary will be in the face of how to deal with subtitle translation in cross-cultural communication,and how to successfully translate the subtitles of a documentary to make it a success in another cultural circle,will involve the selection of subtitle translation principles.Viewing from the perspective of Communication Science,this thesis has applied case study to research the English to Chinese subtitle translation of the high-scored BBC documentary Human Planet.Research findings show that: In E-C subtitle translation of Human Planet,four-character structure and adjustment of sentence order are employed to adjust communication load;Annotation and explicitation are employed to offset noises in communication process;Idioms are employed in translated subtitle,translating public signs,addition of rhotic accent or quotation marks are employed to strengthen the communication effect.However,there are several subtitle translations cause noises in communication and weaken the communication effect,including foreignization of unit of measurement,disconformity in the forms of translated names and mistranslation of some words.In addition,this thesis also researches the two factors beyond subtitle translation that influence the communication effect of a documentary,include the target audience and media patronage.The former is the destination of the communication activity,thus documentary subtitle translation should be audience-oriented;The latter has absolute right of speech on the issue and circulation of a documentary,thus he should help to introduce more quality foreign documentaries and design column for documentary on video platforms to widen the audience range.The score on Douban.com and audience's comments of Human Planet both prove that the documentary enjoys a successful communication in China,and achieves an ideal communication effect. |
