This translation project focuses on the four core factors of school success which are closely related to educators,including teachers,school administrators and so on.The main job was to translate the book The 4 CORE Factors for School Success,written by Todd Whitaker and Jeffrey Zoul.It contains about 80 thousand words,whose Chinese version has been published in May,2017 under a contract with China Youth Publishing Group.This book elucidates the core values of Communication,Observation,Relationships,and Expectations,which contribute to school success.The 4 CORE Factors for School Success belongs to educational text.Its Chinese version can be published mainly due to the first translator's adequate preparations,such as her two years' work experience as students' advisor,her reading of relevant literature,and the translation strategies she learned during her master studies.Moreover,careful correction word by word under the guidance of her supervisor(the second translator)was particularly important.Finally,both translators proofread three times before the book was sent for publication.The content of this translation report includes translation preparations,the reading of literature,application of translation strategies,treatment of difficulties in translation,subsequent proofreading,a summary of the translation experience and so on.Drawing on Venuti' s(2008)theory of domestication and foreignization,this report aims to summarize and analyze specific strategies used in translating the book with typical examples.Comparisons are made between the first version and the final version from four aspects:translation of subtitles(literal translation,amplification,conversion of parts of speech),translation of long sentences(reasonable segmentation,treatment of word order,treatment of non-predicate verbs in relation to the text),translation of redundant sentences and influence of knowledge about cultural background on translation.In addition,it points out the author's weaknesses in the process of translation and the reasons for revisions under the guidance of her supervisor(the second translator).Finally,it summarizes the author's translation experience and provides insights and suggestions for future translation.
