According to Reiss, various text types differ in functions and the text type is the prerequisite to determine the function of the text.Once the text type is determined, the translator is able to choose appropriate translation methods.Based on the three functions of language proposed by German psychologist K.Biihler,Reiss put foiAvard the text typology theory, classifying texts into three types:content-focused texts,form-focused texts and appeal-focused texts. This thesis chooses the first chapter of Death,Dying, and Organ Transplantation published by the Oxford University Press in 2016 as the translation material. It focuses on the ethical issues of terminal choice faced by patients. In accordance with Reiss's text typology theory, the translator classifies the translation material as a content-focused text after analyzing its textual features.Reiss put forward two criteria for the translation of content-focused texts:one is invariant transfer of information;the other is orientation to the target language.Under the guidance of the first criterion, the translator resorts to authoritative materials and conventional translations while translating vocabularies. At the syntactical level, the translator adopts the translation methods of annotation and amplification, invariantly transferring the information from the source text to the target text.Under the guidance of second criterion, taking into consideration the following linguistic features of the source text:the frequent use of long and complex sentences, passive sentences,"It+be+adj.+to do sth" structure and etc.,the translator resorts to corresponding translation methods of conversion, changing from passive voice to active voice, division and reconstruction, which ensures that the translation be in compliance with the idiomatic usage of Chinese. The translator adopts appropriate translation methods and techniques under the guidance of these two criteria. The translation practice shows that the text typology of Reiss is a good guidance for the translation of medical texts. It is hoped that this thesis may shed some lights on the translation of medical texts.
