As society is developing, people are much more sensitive to their health. As an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland,Hashimoto's thyroiditis has become one of the health problems that afflict many people today, since it could destroy the autoimmune system and bring people problems on health, living and work.Hashimoto 's Thyroiditis:Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause is a medical manual written by American pharmacist Izabella Wentz in 2013.It introduces this disease and alternative therapy on treating it.With no approved treatment available, this book is therefore of great value. This thesis takes the chapters about Hashimoto's,methods to find the root cause and treatments as the source text.Guides by Katharina Reiss' text typology,it aims at analyzing effective methods in English to Chinese translation of medical manuals based on the source text.Reiss regards translation as a process of "analysis" and "re-verbalization" of texts. In the analysis, the translator first needs to analyze and identify the text's type, then to analyze its linguistic features. And the conclusions shall be respected in the re-verbalization to represent its function and linguistic features accordingly. This thesis, therefore, starts with analyzing the source text. The source text is identified as an informative text for it mainly conveys information and offers suggestions. Then,it analyzes the linguistic features on the lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels, frequent use of terminology, abbreviations, passive sentences, long and complex sentences, reiteration, and reference in cohesion, for instance.Based on "semantic equivalence"Reiss offers for the translation of informative texts, this thesis takes the medical manual's informative function and linguistic features into account, analyzes the general principles for translating medical texts and summarizes specific techniques used. With this translation conducted under the guidance of Reiss' typological view, the author holds that Reiss' text typology is applicable in the translation of medical manuals. It does not offer a specific translation method, yet it provides a perspective with requirements and criteria on the translation, which makes it more applicable for those experienced to do the translation.
