Nowadays, all the world are facing different degrees of energy crisis. In order to ensure economic and social development,it is urgent to alleviate the energy crisis. Thus, the importance of energy and its international exchanges have become increasingly prominent. Therefore, the translation of such texts has practical and strategic significance.Competition in Energy,a book of Hong Kong Economic Policy Research Series written by Pun-Lee Lam,is an English book without Chinese version so far. This book analyzes economic issues from the perspective of energy, mainly introducing energy industry and policies in Hong Kong in the second half of the 20 th century, and the inspiration of foreign experience in energy liberalization brought to Hong Kong. This book contains six chapters, covering the knowledge of energy, politics, economy and other fields.Based on Reiss' s text typology theory, this report analyzes translation methods and techniques used in the excerpts through case analysis. This translation practice report is expected to provide reference for relevant text translation study. From the perspective of text functions,Katharina Reiss, the famous German translation theorist, states that there are three kinds of text types including informative text, expressive text and operative text, which have their particular translation methods and strategies.According to Reiss' s classification of text types, the economic book Competition in Energy belongs to informative text.Informative text focuses on conveying content, which should be plain and simple without redundancies in translation. The target audience of the translation is Chinese, thus the translation ought to conform to the Chinese convention of expression. That is,to follow the principles of faithfulness, accuracy and readability. In terms of translation methods and techniques, the translator makes a concrete analysis on lexical, syntactic and discoursal levels. On lexical level, literal translation and free translation are adopted in the translation of proper nouns and terminologies.Besides, conversion of part of speech owing to the difference between English and Chinese are analyzed. On syntactic level, addition and omission, division and combination are used. And the change of voice combined with specific context is adopted for the translation of English passive sentences. On discoursal level, cohesive devices are produced flexibly.Rearrangement is also adopted to reintegrate the original information according to the thinking mode and logical order of the target readers,so that the translation can be better accepted.
