Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Remarkable Plants That Shape Our World(Chapter 7)

This translation practice report is based on the book Remarkable Plants That Shape Our World written by William Bynum and Helen Bynum,two English botanists.Published in Oct of 2014,it still has no Chinese editionAt the invitation of China Photography Publishing House,the author is responsible for the translation of chapters 7 and 8.This report contains four chapters,including introduction,translation preparation and process,case analysis as well as conclusion.Educational book Remarkable Plants That Shape Our World enjoys four characteristics including scientificity,popularity,interestingness and literariness so that the basic task for translators is to accurately make botanical knowledge spread out among readers.Based on these four features of this book,the author put many relative theories and techniques into the translation process of words,sentences and paragraphs in order to keep the unique characteristics of the original text and make the Chinese version conform to the language features of the targeted readers.Translation methods at word,sentence and paragraph level are the main part of this report.Specifically,translation methods at word level comprise meaning extension and part of speech conversion.At the sentence level,the translation process is a combination of various strategies,including amplification,omission,splitting,linear translation,recasting,automation and specification and so on.The cohesion and logicality of different paragraphs is also an important task for translators.The author makes a revision and reflection after this translation practice.The author hopes this translation practice report can bring some inspirations for translation in natural science.
