As a part of verbal communication,linguistic taboo is not only a linguistic phenomenon,but also a cultural phenomenon,which reflecting different values and customs among cultures.With the development of globalization,communication between different cultures is increasing,but influenced by cultural difference and thinking-mode difference,intercultural communicative barriers are inevitable.Linguistic taboo,especially,is a sensitive issue in intercultural communication.Therefore,it is necessary to understand linguistic taboo,in order to aim better communication result,and facilitate exchanges among various cultures.This paper attempts to make a comparative study of linguistic taboos in Tibetan and English culture from aspects of "name","death","disease" and "disability","vulgarity","animal","number" and "religion",which will help to improve intercultural communicative competence of relevant population,reduce conflicts of intercultural communication,and promote the intercultural exchange.This paper is composed of seven chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of this paper,which includes research background,significance,methodology and questions.In the second chapter,the current research status of linguistic taboo,intercultural communication and Hofstede's value dimensions are reviewed.The third chapter is descriptive analysis of linguistic taboos in Tibetan and English cultures from the aspects of "name","death","disease"and"disability","vulgarity","animal","number" and "religion".In the forth chapter,it analyses the similarities and differences of linguistic taboos in both cultures,and discusses the reasons of their differences based on the principle of individualism and collectivism from Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory.The fifth chapter analyses the formation of linguistic taboo in both cultures from psychological factors and social cultural factors.The sixth chapter is implications of linguistic taboo for intercultural communication and language teaching and learning.And the last chapter summarizes the research results and lists the limitations of this paper.
