Can Folk Psychology Be Eliminated?

According to the definition of "Folk psychology" or "common sense psychology",it refers to a psychological resource hidden in each of us,which has a huge significance for the philosophy of mind,and therefore has become a hot research object of philosophy of mind.The most important result was the birth of a new and radical form of physicalism called eliminativism.The eliminative ontologically maintains that there is no psychological state concluded by folk psychology.With the development of research,the position of eliminativism theory is constantly changing,for example,from the original proposition of completely eliminating folk psychology to the recent emergence of"dialectical" eliminativism theory,whose main representative is Stephen Stich.If we trace the results of previous studies in folk psychology,it is not hard to find that the reason why philosophy and science failed to make a substantial breakthrough in the understanding of the mind in the past is that researchers have the shackles of "folk psychology" in their hearts,which is like a tight clamp on people's understanding.Therefore,the top priority of contemporary philosophy of mind is to find out the truth,origin,mechanism,function and essence of folk psychology.He argues that while folk psychology permeates our everyday activities of interpretation and prediction,it also permeates psychology,philosophy,and the classical cognitive sciences.But by its very nature,it is a false theory.States of mind such as beliefs and desires are like"golden mountains" and "unicorns" that don't exist.Thus,he remolded folk psychology and divided it into "implicit" and "explicit" parts.Folk psychology,as a theoretical part,is removed and retained as a part of ability,in an attempt to establish a new and dialectical eliminativism.The first part mainly carries on "the geography big discovery" to the folk psychology,investigating the origin and development of the folk psychology.This paper deeply analyzes the origin,development,content and essence of folk psychology.Moreover,the scope of "folk psychology" should be standardized,and the words,usages and meanings of folk psychology should be defined.The paper also explains the western tradition folk psychology pattern and the authoritative view of mind.The second part mainly introduces Stich's early theory of "eliminativism".To begin with,he divided the general claim of the eliminativism into four categories and deduct the causal connection of the four arguments by logical analysis.Secondly,he questioned the acquiescence of most philosophers and scientists,tracing the origin of waves back to their historical origin.The third part mainly expounds the reasons for the change of Stich's position.He delves into the sources of folk psychology that lurk within people,and through his examination of the myths of the Sellarsian,he discovers that our reports of our own internal state of mind can be false.That is,belief,desire and other commonsense mental states are a folk psychological assumption of the mind.Therefore,he turned the problem to the field of cognitive science and found that cognitive science usually tries to explain cognitive and behavioral abilities through an internal and implicit theory.The fourth part mainly introduces Stich's attempt to rebuild the inventory of "folk psychology" competence.He divided the capacities of folk psychology into five categories.To make a better distinction,he included five abilities in his list of competency mechanisms called the "implicit" component of folkloric competence.Folk psychology outside the checklist mechanism is called the "explicit" part.Then the paper introduces the change of Stich's position on cancellation.From the previous "radical"elimination to the current "moderate" elimination.Folk psychology,he argues,should be partly eliminated,not entirely.Folk psychology,as the "implici",ability in the cognitive structure,is reserved and "Occam's razor"is carried out as the "folk psychology theory"besides the list ability.The fifth part concludes with an explanation of Stich's own attitude towards folk psychology.Folk psychology as a theory is as fundamentally wrong as phlogiston and caloric fluid and the luminiferous.Folk psychology is still dying,but it gives us a better picture.In the ontological reform of contemporary philosophy of the mind,the first task is to do a good job in "disenchantment"of the mind.Only by deconstructing the dominant psychological schema in common sense and tradition can we construct a more scientific and perfect view of the mind.
