A Report On The C-E Translation Of ESW Elevator Installation Instruction

With the increasing growth of Chinese foreign trade,various machines such as elevators,excavators and bulldozers are exported to other countries.Therefore,a qualified translation of their installation instruction is an essential medium to guarantee the product safety and earn the customers' trust in the product.ESW Elevator Installation Instruction is a text translated by the author when she was an intern at Linguist Translation Services in Chengdu.By taking this text as a case study,this report explores the translation strategies and translation techniques for translating electromechanical product installation instruction so as to provide a reference for the translation of such text.This report firstly describes the whole task and pre-translation preparation,then analyzes translation difficulties and proposes corresponding solutions.Finally,it presents the reflection and evaluation of this translation task.This report focuses on the difficulties in translating compound words,non-subject and complex sentences during translating ESW elevator installation instruction.Through analyzing the differences in the word-formation of compound words and the structure of sentences between Chinese and English,the author summaries the difficulties in translating compound words,non-subject sentences and complex sentences as well as the causes of these difficulties.Based on the above analysis,the author adopts some translation strategies and techniques for translating compound words,non-subject sentences and complex sentences in electromechanical product installation instruction under the guidance of Skopos theory.For better communication of the information and the maximization of the function of the source text,the author applies these translation strategies and techniques so as to produce a smoother and more acceptable target text: compound words can be translated by literal translation and free translation;non-subject sentences can be transformed into passive sentences or imperative sentences;and complex sentences can be translated by syntactic linearity and reconstruction.Through this report,the author believes that the above translation strategies and translation techniques can be references for other translators during the Chinese-English translation of electromechanical product installation instruction.As a result,the translation can deliver more accurate information for the readers so that the costumers can properly install and safely use the products and trust Chinese products.In addition,a qualified translator is supposed to learn more knowledge in different fields and keep improving professional ability.
