The LiuShu(??)was first defined by XuShen(??)in ShuoWenJieZi(????):“The first method is called ZhiShi(??).It means you can recognize it when you see it,inspect and you'll see what it means, just like the words‘Shang(?)'and‘Xia(?)'.The second method is called XiangXing(??).It means draw a picture of something and bending with the curve of it,just like the words‘Ri(?)'and‘Yue(?)'.The third method is called XingSheng(??).This type of word consists of two parts, the left side represents the type to which the word belongs, and the right side represents the pronunciation of the word, just like the words‘Jiang(?)'and‘He(?)'.The fourth method is called HuiYi(??).It also consists of two parts, which together represent the meaning of the word, just like the words‘Wu(?)'and‘Xin(?)'.The fifth method is called ZhuanZhu(??).It means to put words of the same kind together, designate one to represent the word, and then share its meaning with other words, just like the words‘Kao(?)'and‘Lao(?)'.The sixth method is called JiaJie(??).It means that the word can't be found in the dictionary, and that it was created according to its phonetics, just like the words‘Ling(?)'and‘Chang(?)'.”However, due to the failure to implement the viewpoints of“ZhuanZhu”and“JiaJie”in the specific interpretations, scholars of later generations have been confused and divided into different opinions. The method“ZhuanZhu”has many theories, such as“theory of transliteration of form”,“theory of transliteration of sound”,“theory of transliteration of meaning”,“theory of combination of words”,“theory of mutual interpretation”,“theory of extended”,“theory of transliteration of meaning and similar pronunciation”,“theory of simplicity”and“theory of side-by-side annotation of polysemous characters”.The method“JiaJie”has“theory of one word use many times”,“theory of extend”,“theory of borrows words”etc. The reason why these statements cannot reach consensus is that they deviate from XuShen's definition of eight words definition, and even completely abandon XuShen's definition and create a solution of their own.We think that the study of“LiuShu”,XuShen's definition of eight words is the most basic basis, can not bypass the definition of XuShen definition of eight words, more can not arbitrarily deny the definition of XuShen definition of eight words.Since XuShen said that the“LiuShu”are the foundation of Chinese characters,“ZhuanZhu”and“JiaJie”cannot be excluded to become“The four methods of word formation are the basis, and the last two are the methods of using words(????).”Our research on the“LiuShu”is to try to uncover and dredge up this relationship that has been difficult to understand for thousands of years. This paper holds that “ZhuanZhu” and “JiaJie” are word-making methods, which are generated when things cannot be fully pointed out, meanings cannot be fully understood, and sound cannot be fully harmonic. However, compared with other “Four Methods of Creating Chinese Characters”,“ZhuanZhu” and “JiaJie” cannot create characters independently,so they must be embodied in “HuiYi” and “XingSheng” and assume the part of “From Monolithic Characters to Complex Characters” in the process of character construction.
