Based on the three manipulative factors of the manipulation theory, the thesis aims to explore the translation characteristics of Chinese children's literature(CCL)from 1980 to 1999 and the influence factors against its social and historical background. With the method of qualitative analysis, the thesis studies the national policies, international situations and views on children in the 1980 s and 1990 s.Via data analysis and literature analysis,it outlines the overall situation of the CCL translation and finds out the manipulation of ideology, poetics as well as the patronage on CCL translation.Taking the Chinese-English(C-E)translation of Xiaobutou Qiyuji[The Adventures of A Little Rag Doll] as a case study, the thesis analyzes the influence of the three factors of manipulation theory on the English translation of CCL.As the first work nominated as the Hans Christian Andersen Award,Xiaobutou Qiyuji [The Adventures of A Little Rag Doll] was popular among children's readers. The conclusions can be drawn as follows:(1)The translation of CCL from 1980 to 1999 was manipulated by ideology, patronage and poetics. It was a translation activity led by the state institutions and influenced by poetics.(2)Under the influence of the three manipulative elements, the translation of CCL presents different characteristics in the four aspects of genre, topic selection, quantity change and target language.(3)Based on manipulation theory,in the C-E translation study of Xiaobutou Qiyuji [The Adventures of A Little Rag Doll],the translator adopted different translation strategies and skills in order to balance political requirements and the literariness of the translated CCL because of the manipulation of national ideology and poetics.By the studies of the CCL translation from 1980 to 1999,the thesis may provide some enlightenment to the policy-making of international introduction to CCL nowadays, and respond to the strategy of Chinese culture “going global”.
