On Translation Strategies Of Mo Yan's Works From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

As a famous contemporary writer,Mo Yan is the first Chinese to win the Nobel Prize for literature.His work “Folk Music” which is known as a “Qiqi” that shows the little blind man moves the people in Masan with music and their hearts have been purified.The thesis chooses “Folk Music” as the text for English translation.The quality of translation is improved under the guidance of Skopos Theory,which has some reference on the similar texts.In the early 1970 s,functional translation theory emerged in Germany.It integrates Fermi's Skopos Theory,Rice's text type theory,Hoss' s translation behavior theory and Nord's function and loyalty theory to form its own unique theoretical body,providing a new perspective for translation studies.Skopos Theory is quite different from traditional ones in that it emphasizes the subjectivity of translators and regards translation as a behavioral theory and cross-cultural communication activity.The first principle of Skopos Theory is skopos rule.The purpose to be achieved in translation determines the whole process of translation,that is,the result determines the method and strategy.In addition,Skopos Theory follows the principles of coherence and faithfulness.This thesis studies the translation strategies of “Folk Music” from the perspective of Skopos Theory.The Original Version is translated without theory instruction and The Revised Version is carried out under the guidance of Skopos Theory.By comparing the two texts and following the three principles of Skopos Theory,the author adopts the translation strategies,methods and techniques of translating words by words,paraphrasing,adding the background information,omitting the redundant information,transliterating plus explanations as well as keeping national or cultural words.The first part introduces the research background,methodologies,the significance and the overall structure of the study.The second part summarizes studies of Skopos Theory,Mo Yan's works and the translation of Mo Yan's works.The third part focuses on the origin and development of Skopos Theory and the major viewpoints.The fourth part explains the preparation and translation of “Folk Music.”The fifth part studies the corresponding translation strategies under skopos,coherence and fidelity rule.The final part concludes with a brief summary of the choice of translation strategies under the guidance of the theory and also points out the inadequacies of the research and proposes corresponding solutions.In a word,based on “Folk Music,” this thesis improves the article under the guidance of Skopos Theory,which is of referential significance to the translation of Mo Yan's works.At the same time,the short story “Folk Music” is faithfully and accurately delivered to foreign readers,so that foreign readers can feel the unique charm of Chinese culture,so as to achieve the purpose of promoting and spreading Chinese culture.
