A Study Of Chinese Translation Of Vagueness In Literature Works Based On Skopos Theory

Precision is a nature of language,but with the deepening of research on linguistics,vagueness is also found to be a substantive characteristic of language,which is showed in language through vague language.Zadeh firstly proposed the concept of “Fuzzy set”,then scholars from home and abroad began their thorough research on vague language.Vague language in our daily life are capable of making our tone softer and averting some passive circumstances.Precise language can make the writhers or speakers well understood by readers or audience,while vague language makes it more expressive and aesthetic.As an important cultural communication tool,language in literatures is loaded with factors like society,culture and humanity.Researches before mainly focuses on vagueness in fields like diplomacy,commercials,television dramas,etc,but literature vagueness hardly noted by scholars,thus,it is necessary to conduct more and deeper research on it.This thesis tries to apply the main rules of Skopos Theory to vague language translation in literatures,find out the accessibility of vagueness translation under the guidance of Skopos Theory through analyze the vagueness in Chinese translation.Skopos Theory is the core theory of Germany functionalist school,which including three rules----Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.During the development of functionalist theories,Nord finds out Skopos Theory has some shortcomings in translation,then the fidelity rule is put forward,which makes the translation more significant under the direction of Skopos Theory,especially the literature translation.However,many translators think the Skopos Theory is not appropriate for literature translation and they still hold the idea that the translated text should be equivalent to the source text and what the translated text should do is to present the content and way of the source text.This thesis considers that the concept of “equivalence” and regarding translation as the original-oriented are not feasible for all literature translation.Translation is served for readers after all,so translators can not ignore its social effects,communicational functions and the reactions of target readers when translating literatures.The above is exactly the core contents that must be considered when applying Skopos Theory to literature translations.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,this paper aim to study vague language from many literature works home and abroad as well as analyze the vague language in Wuthering Heights and their Chinese translation from the translated work written by famous scholar Yang Yi on the basis of reading a good deal of books and articles,three major questions are discussed:(1)Why dose vague language commonly exist in literature works?(2)What factors should be taken into consideration in the translation of vagueness in literature works?(3)What kinds of translating strategies can be applied to translate vague language in literature works? The author finds out that the reasons why vague language commonly exists in literature works are: vague language can improve the clarity of language expression,strengthen the flexibility of language expression,meticulously reveal characters' inner word,lead to wonderful reverie,stimulate readers' aesthetic consciousness and explore the artistic conception and give readers enjoyment of beauty.Second,Translators should take factors like the formal and functional equivalence,the impediment of culture and the understandability of translation into consideration during the process of translation.Third,Skopos Theory has certain guidance function on the vagueness translation in literature works.There are three translating strategies can be used to translate vague language in literature works: vagueness for vagueness,precision for vagueness and vagueness for precision.Chapter one mainly introduces this thesis' s research significance,structure and research background,etc.Chapter two presents the researches on vagueness of language home and abroad.Chapter three is the theory foundation,the Skopos Theory are introduced in detail.Chapter four and chapter five are the main body of the thesis and conclusion respectively.
