"Xing" is an important concept in China's classical culture,but there is no consensus about the research on "Xing" all the time.This paper took "1900 to 2018" as the specific time range,and has collected and sorted a total of 23 monographs and 336 documents,including 25 papers of masters and doctors.On this basis,the author tried to make a theoretical review about the research results and the evolution of development of “Xing” over the past hundred years.The full text consists of four chapters:The first chapter is about the origin of "Xing".After the May Fourth Movement,Wen Yiduo had already touched on the origin of "Xing" when discussing the original connections of "Xing" and "argot".After the founding of the People's Republic of China,Zhang Chaoke's "Labor Theory" introduced the origin of "Xing" into the original song and dance.After the reform and opening up,Zhao Peilin put forward the theory that "Xing" originated from primordial religion and pushed the discussion of this issue to a climax.Around the same time,Ye Shuxian and Tu Yuanji started from the subjective consciousness and traced the origin of "Xing" to the primordial thought.The second chapter discussed that Whether "Xing" has a meaning.In the early 20 th century,the issue of whether "Xing" has meaning aroused widespread concern in the academia.The author sorted out the specific viewpoints and classified the focus of the discussion into the three categories,namely,Homophonic,semantic and both homophonic and semantic.And analyzed the degree of recognition of various theories in today's academia.The third chapter described the classification of "Xing".The author took three significant principles,namely,the relationships between "The everything in nature” and "The feeling of author has for everything",the ways of stimulants,the natures of "xing" as basis,distinguished the specific viewpoints of each scholar in detail in each context.Therefore,a more distinct classification framework was obtained.The fourth chapter is about the functions of "xing".This chapter mainly discussed the roles of "Xing" in the fields of classical Confucianism,literature and aesthetics.The "Xing" in the study of classical Confucianism plays a role of political diplomacy,which has the function of sarcasm in the metaphorical way.The "Xing" in the literature takes the poetry as the main object of study and emphasizes its functions of rhyming,suggesting and creating artistic conception in poetry.The “Xing” in aesthetics is integrated into the aesthetic experience of creation,expression and appreciation.Throughout the study of "Xing" since the 20 th century,there are many miscellaneous theories,and the achievements are numerous and scattered.According to the specific literatures,the author tried to make a rectification for the study of "Xing" over the past hundred years from the four aspects mentioned above.The author hope that the thesis can provide a distinct reference for the future research on "Xing" through the review of it.What's more,it can promote the academic research process in this area.
