Handwritten text is the earliest type of writing, but with the develop of the printing industry, printed texts have become more popular in people's lives, previous researchers studied the cognitive processing process of reading with the printed text as the object.Previous studies have taken alphabetic texts as objects, and found that in alphabetic texts, when readers read difficult handwritten words, the lexical effect(for example, word frequency effect)was more significant and there was a significant reading cost. This study used the eye movement recording method with high ecological validity to investigate the lexical effect in Chinese handwritten text reading by recording the eye movement trajectory of readers when they read the handwritten text. Two experiments were conducted in present study:There were 48 adults taking part in Experiment One.Experiment One uses a 2(word frequency:high frequency, low frequency)×3(text type:printed words.easy handwritten, difficult handwritten)within-subject design,in order to investigate the reading cost and lexical characteristics of the subjects when they read handwritten Chinese text. There were 48 adults taking part in Experiment Two.Experiment Two uses a 2(the number of strokes:more, fewer)× 3(text type:printed words, easy handwritten, difficult handwritten)within-subject design,in order to investigate the reading cost and stroke number effect of the subjects during Chinese handwritten reading. From the results and analysis, the conclusion was shown as follows.(1)In Chinese handwritten text reading, difficult handwritten text in the reading process showed significant reading costs.(2)In the process of reading the three text types in Chinese, the word frequency effect is significant, but the word frequency effect is not affected by the text type.(3)The illegible handwritten text shows the reversal effect of stroke number in the reading process, which is mainly manifested in the post-lexical integration stage.
