This article is a translation practice report and the source text is from The North and South Poles in the Opposing Viewpoints Series published by Greenhaven Press in 2010,it is of the popular science category.Fang Mengzhi believes that popular science articles are part of the scientific and technical style.The popular science article is written for the layman.The author of the science should make the scientific reason clear and make the best use of the literary rhetoric.Relatively speaking,the popular science articles are not very formal.In fact,the scientific and technical texts that the general public are exposed to are mostly popular science texts.The number of the readers of scientific papers and technical texts is very small.As a popular-science text,its purpose is to convey scientific facts to readers in a language that is easy to understand.Compared with scientific texts,popular-science texts have a feature of literature;and compared with pure literary works,more rigor is needed,which shows the importance of popular-science text translation.The translation practice report takes The North and South Poles as an example.The writer firstly acknowledged the background,text type,text characteristics,summarized the characteristics of the source language and the requirements of the client and determined the purpose of translation.Based on the purpose of translation and specific analysis of specific issues,the writer chose appropriate translation strategies and methods for translation to solve difficulties encountered in the translation process.By reflecting on the problems encountered in translation,and summarizing the experience and lessons of this translation practice,the writer wants to provide experience for future translation practice,and provides reference for the translation of popular science texts.
