Representation Of Text Features In E-C Translation Of Popular Science

The thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation of The Secret Life of Equations– The 50 greatest equations and how they work(Chapter Two),which was written by Rich Cochrane and published in 2016.The original book is a typical writing of popular science,the author of the thesis translated 16 equations,including Kepler's First Law,Universal Gravitation,Newton's Second Law,Conservation of Angular Momentum and so on.Based on the four characteristics of popular science,which is proposed by Professor Guo Jianzhong,namely,scientificalness,popularity,literariness and interesting and an analysis of the contents and the linguistic features of the original text,the author of the thesis chooses Translation Variation Theory(TVT)as a theoretical guidance.TVT was proposed by Huang Zhonglian,who held in his book Translation Variation Theory that TVT should be best applied to scientific works(among which popular science is one of the variants).He thought that readers is extremely important and put forward seven translation methods:amplification,omission,compilation,narration,combination,remodeling and abbreviation.In this report,the author of this thesis tries to summarize some translation skills and methods that used to represent the four characteristics in the translation,taking the four features as the entry point,and TVT as a theoretical guidance.And this thesis indicated the problems encountered in the translation process from the four aspects.From the scientificalness,the difficulty in translation is professional words.In terms of popularity,the focus is on the difference between Chinese and English sentence structure.So,it is necessary to transfer the original text information smoothly and precisely to ensure that translation text conforms to the writing habits of target readers.For the literariness,translation in description,narration and rhetorical devices should be attached.In terms of interesting,cartoon pictures,interesting little stories,examples and experiments are used in the original text,which is also a translation focus.This thesis concludes that seven methods of TVT should be flexibly used in the process of translation for a representation of the four characteristics of the popular science,hoping that some references will be provided for the translation of similar texts.
