With the economic globalization, there are increasing communications between Chinese and Western cultures, which also learn from each other. In education,China has introduced advanced Western English language textbooks to spread new knowledge and culture. And high-quality translations are essential to spread accurately. This thesis is a practice report on the translation of the tenth, eleventh and twelveth Chapter of Ray's Practical Arithmetic written by Joseph Ray.With explanations and exercises,it introduces the basic concepts, principles and theorems of American elementary school mathematics in detail, belonging to the scientific and technical text. The author uses the Relevance Theory in pragmatics to guide this translation practice and tease out the translation process of mathematical scientific and technical text in detail,on which this report is written. After studying the text type and language features of the translation materials, the author analyzes the problems in the translation process in vocabulary and sentence by inducing and comparing specific cases under the guidance of the Relevance Theory in order to explore more appropriate and effective translation strategies and methods. The author finds that in translating mathematical scientific and technical text,it is necessary not only to accurately convey the scientific knowledge of the original text, but to allow the target readers to associate new knowledge with the old knowledge of their original cognitive structure to comprehend the text. Therefore, the author guides the translation process according to the two inference processes of the Relevance Theory—infer the author's communicative intention according to the original context;and infer a proper translation according to target readers' cognitive context—so as to provide a new perspective and optimize the translation process further.Meanwhile, the author also hopes that the thesis can provide some reference for the translation of mathematical scientific and technical text in the future, and lead to more thinking.
