The Flexibility In The Expression Stage Of English-chinese Translation

This report is based on translating The Thirty Years' War written by the English historian Samuel Rawson Gardiner.The Thirty Years' War is a very important book for scholars and experts in China and abroad to study European history.Therefore,this translation is of great significance.In the process of completing the translation task,the author fails to express flexibly in target language due to her unawareness of the target language's features and the target readers' expectation.Therefore,this report focuses on translation flexibility,first listing the specific problems encountered in the process of translating,and then explaining how the author uses such flexibility strategies as addition,deletion,adaptation,word order conversion and voice conversion to solve the problems encountered.Finally,it is concluded that a qualified translator needs to have more professional knowledge and learn to use flexible means in the process of translating.The report is divided into five parts.The first part is about the background,significance and requirements of the translation task.The second part is the project process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation correction.The third part describes the problems encountered in translation practice and their solutions.The fourth part is a case study,which mainly introduces how the translator combines the two dimensions of reader acceptability and translation fluency in various adaptation strategies used in the translation.The fifth part is the summary of experience obtained after completing the translation task.
