In the late Vietnam War,the "war escalation" policy led by President Johnson was weakening on the battlefield in Vietnam. The roaring "rolling thunder" did not defeat the determination of North Vietnam to fight against the United States. The launch of the spring offensive not only killed the Americans'will to fight, but also made the United States realize that it could not win the final victory of the Vietnam War.In the face of the grim situation of internal and external troubles,President Johnson's policy toward Vietnam has gradually changed from the original "war escalation" to "war relegation",which opened the prelude to the US withdrawal from the Vietnam battlefield.During the Nixon administration,President Nixon aimed to "end the Vietnam War" and adopted the "dual track" approach under the guidance of“The Nixon Doctrine" to further clarify the policy of withdrawing the United States from the Vietnam battlefield. On the one hand,he armed South Vietnam through the "Vietnamization" policy and allowed"Vietnamese to fight Vietnamese",thus allowing the United States to withdraw from the battlefield in Vietnam. On the other hand,it used peaceful means to conduct open and secret negotiations with North Vietnam and at the negotiating table to gain time for the US"Vietnamization" policy and let the United States achieve the goal of "decent" withdrawal from Vietnam. After the contest between the two sides on the battlefield and at the negotiating table, the United States and Vietnam finally reached a peace agreement, and US combatants on the battlefield in Vietnam gradually withdrew. However, the South Vietnamese government without the protection of the US military could not withstand the unified offensive from North Vietnam. With the take-off of the last US military helicopter in Saigon, the United States finally completed the task of evacuating from the Vietnam battlefield. The withdrawal of the United States from Vietnam prompted Vietnam to eventually return to unity and ended decades of fragmentation. The history of the entire US withdrawal from the Vietnam battlefield is also full of difficulties and twists and turns. From the beginning of Johnson's policy of withdrawing to the Vietnam battlefield,to the departure of Ford's complete withdrawal from Vietnam, the decision-making process of the United States in withdrawing from the Vietnam battlefield has always been affected by many factors. There are external environmental changes and internal factors. No matter what factors make the United States change its decision-making,it is still the national interest of the United States to determine the ultimate factor in the US decision-making transition.
