A Report Of Interpreting Project On The "Road & Bridge Engineering Technical Training For Nepal"

With the development of China's overall national strength and globalization,China has maintained an increasingly closed cooperation with developing countries.As a result,interpretation needs spring up along with the more extensive and well-organized China-aid projects.The opening ceremony of the "Road&Bridge Engineering Technical Training for Nepal,2018" was hosted by China's Ministry of Commerce and undertaken by Hunan International Business Vocational College on May 4th in Changsha city,and the project lasted 28 days.The interpreter was mainly involved in the consecutive interpreting of the training courses and the liaison interpreting for relevant enterprises,which all turned out to be valuable experiences.The interpreting for international training programs is normally of long duration,extensive contents and considerable expertise with multiple interpreting types involved,thus it requires not only good interpreting skills but also comprehensive qualities of the interpreter.In general,major difficulties the interpreter encountered in this project could be concluded in three aspects.There are respectively the large quantity of terms and expertise in civil engineering,overloaded cognitive task of Nepali English accent and vague understanding of interpreters' subjectivity in unexpected situations.Accordingly,some solutions are proposed which are based on the interpreter's experiences,first-hand materials and deep reflections.Firstly,the interpreter could build a preliminary terminology corpus and absorb background knowledge effectively.Secondly,three major strategies could be followed to overcome accent issue which are practicing before interpreting by using online accent corpus,adjusting during interpreting and building a targeted accent corpus after interpreting.Thirdly,the interpreter should study translation theories in depth and strengthen his/her subjective awareness.The interpreter accumulated abundant first-hand recording and text materials in road&bridge field,and it is expected that this report can provide reference for interpreters of China-aid projects as well as relevant researchers.
